Dear McKinley Families,
We have important events occurring this week. On Monday McKinley Elementary School and all other schools in the United States will be observing Martin Luther King Junior Holiday. He is known for advancing civil rights in our society. Advancing our students’ learning for a better future is a part of his legacy. There will be no school and the office will be closed to remember his contributions. Here is a video from our district Superintendent and school board members about the importance of Martin Luther King Junior.
On Wednesday, January 20 teachers will be showing the Presidential Inauguration of President- Elect, Joseph Biden. Here are some resources teachers and families can use to discuss the election and recent occurrences in Washington D.C. They are both in English and Spanish.

Music, STEAM, and PE announcements
All students receive either a 1, 2, 3, or 4 on report cards in all subjects. When students do not attend Music, STEAM or PE class they can receive a 1. A 1 means that they are not meeting the class’s expectations or attending class. Students may receive better grades but they have to attend zoom classes or complete independent work. Our Music and STEAM teacher assign work on google classroom and our PE teacher has a weekly survey students can complete on the school PE website. Click here for more information on Music, STEAM, and PE.
Battle of the Books
Battle of the Books is an opportunity for students in grades 4-6 to read great books and talk with other students about what they're reading. Each year a list of books is selected and students are invited to read as many of them as possible. If students read at least 15, they may be invited to participate in a competition with students from all over Santa Barbara County at the end of April. Students are invited to meet with Ms. Gates (our Literacy Coach) and Mrs. Easbey (our Librarian) each Monday at lunch time to share what they're reading and hear from other students. The competition is not required so even if your student isn't interested in that part, we would love to welcome them to our group!
Students may join our Zoom meeting on Tuesday, January 19 at 12:10 by following this link: https://sbunified.zoom.us/j/3064253879
