Principal Message - January 11

Dear McKinley Families,

We have a lot to look forward to this week at McKinley Elementary School! Please read the message below to see important information!

Sincerely,

Elena Garcia-Yoshitomi, Ed.D.

Principal

Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books is an opportunity for students in grades 4-6 to read great books and talk with other students about what they're reading. Each year a list of books is selected and students are invited to read as many of them as possible. If students read at least 15, they may be invited to participate in a competition with students from all over Santa Barbara County at the end of April. Students are invited to meet with Ms. Gates (our Literacy Coach) and Mrs. Easbey (our Librarian) each Monday at lunch time to share what they're reading and hear from other students. The competition is not required so even if your student isn't interested in that part, we would love to welcome them to our group!

Students may join our Zoom meeting on Monday 1/11 at 12:10 by following this link: https://sbunified.zoom.us/j/3064253879

The Skirt

Our students were all given the book The Skirt.  Our families can read together or listen to our school librarian read the book to them on her YouTube channel! Students can record themselves reading their favorite page from the story for a chance to win a prize! Students can also complete this survey about whether or not they liked or read the book for a chance to win a reward from the school! Here is the link to the survey!

La Cumbre Junior High Orientation

La Cumbre Junior High School Principal, Dr. Bradley Brock, came to our sixth grade classes to provide a brief orientation about junior high school.  He gave students an overview of the middle school experience, introduced himself and the staff, and answered students' questions. We will also have visits from the counselors at La Cumbre, and being the process of course selection. Sixth grade teachers will keep you in the loop about this process! Click on the link to see Dr. Brock’s presentation!
